23rd International Istanbul Film Festival

The International Jury of the 23rd International Istanbul Film Festival presided over by Hugh Hudson (UK) and composed of Bengt Forslund (Sweden), Michael Galasso (USA), Michele Levieux (France), Derek Malcolm (UK), Jafar Panahi (Iran), Tayfun Pirselimoğlu (Turkey) and Serra Yılmaz (Turkey) has decided to give:

The GOLDEN TULIP Award to “Bu San / Goodbye, Dragon Inn” by Tsai Ming-Liang (Taiwan) for it laments the death of a cinema, but not the death of cinema. A love story, a ghost story and a story of hope for a universal art.

The SPECIAL PRIZE OF THE JURY has been shared between “Profesionalac / The Professional” by Dusan Kovavevic (Serbia-Montenegro) for its outstanding script and “L’Esquive” by Abdellatif Kehiche (France) for its harmonious ensemble acting.

I myself could not watch too many movies in the festival this year when I compare my "performance" according to previous years. Here is my list:

Low-Calorie Diet May Lengthen Life

Regimen Reduces Risk of Diseases Associated With Aging

A small group of people who are drastically restricting how much they eat in the hope of slowing the aging process have produced the strongest support yet for the tantalizing theory that very low-calorie diets can extend the human lifespan.

The first study of people who voluntarily imposed draconian diets on themselves found that their cholesterol levels, blood pressure and other major risk factors for heart disease -- the biggest killer -- plummeted, along with risk factors for diabetes and possibly other leading causes of death such as cancer and Alzheimer's.

"These people are definitely protected against the major killers," said John O. Holloszy of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, who led the study, released online yesterday. "It should definitely increase longevity."

Türkiye'de internetin 11. yılı kutlanıyor. Pek coşkulu, heyecanlı, gürültü patırtılı bir etkinlik olduğunu söyleyemem. Sivil toplum hareketlerinin bunca cılız olduğu bir ülkede internet gibi bağımsız ve bağlantısız bir yapının organize bir kutlamaya sahip olmasını beklemiyorduk zaten biz de.

11 yıllık internet, benim gazetecilik hayatıma eşit. Teknoloji tutkumsa çok daha eskiye dayanıyor. Dokuz senedir de o konuda yazıyorum. Yani ben elime kalemi aldığımda buraları hep dutluktu. Zamanında kapsaydım bir arazi, şimdi Koç'tum, Sabancı'ydım. Olmadı değil; bir zaman benim de bir sitem oldu, hatta beni hayretler içinde bırakacak kadar da popüler oldu ama sonra 'gazetecilik mi, sitecilik mi?' sorusu geldi. Gerisi belli. Üstelik, bunlar hep ayrı mesele.

İnternet, haberleşme amacıyla başladığı hizmet alanını bilgilenme ve eğlenme konusunda da sürdürüyor. Dünyanın gelişmiş kesimi internet sayesinde daha da palazlanıyor, zenginleşiyor; geri bıraktırılmış kesimiyse onu kullanarak aradaki farkı elinden geldiğince kapatmaya çalışıyor.

İnternet hep eşitlikçilik, demokrasi, sansürsüzlük ve bireysel özgürlük sloganlarıyla cilalansa da pekala biliyoruz ki o da diğer pek çok nimet gibi aslında yoksulla zengin arasındaki uçurumu kazıp derinleştirmekten başka bir işe yaramıyor. Biz hangi taraftayız peki? Birçok benzer konuda olduğu gibi kendimize ait özel bir yerde, cihannümadan seyrediyoruz alemi.
Rakamlara göre iki yıldır Türkiye'de internet kullanıcısı sayısında artış yok. Dünyayı saran ağ, kartopu gibi geçtiği her yerde kendine yeni kitleleri yapıştırırken Türkiye gölü maya tutmuyor. Dünyanın en kalabalık genç nüfuslarından birine sahip ülkemiz, dev bir kuşağını bilginin bu kadar ulaşılabilir, eğitimin bu kadar kitlesel, ucuz ve verimli hale geldiği bir çağda 'kaybediyor'. İşin ilginci artık o kadar genç bir ülke de değiliz. Kuşaklar yaşlanıyor, doğum oranları azalıyor. Tek sevindirici bilgi, interneti dünyayla aynı anda ülkemizde yaşamaya başlamış olmamız. Eposta, chat, MP3 gibi terimler sanki ezelden beri hayatımızdaydı...

Block That Ringtone!

It could happen on a train, in a restaurant or during an awe-inspiring aria at a performance of "Carmen": a neighbor's cellphone starts bleating the theme song from "Friends," disrupting the mood and setting nerves on edge. Wouldn't it be great, you think to yourself, if this couldn't happen?

Others are thinking likewise, including companies and researchers developing or already selling devices that render cellphones inoperable in certain locations. Methods include jammers that interfere with cellphone frequencies, routing systems that mute phones' ringers in specific places, sensors that detect active cellphones and building materials that block cellphone waves.

Bu Sabah Yağmur Var İstanbul'da...

İki parça güneş gördük ya, iyice ince çıkmaya başladık dışarıya... Oysa nedir? Bahar yağmuru diye bir lşey vardır... İniverir yağmur tependen aşağıya... Sen de yanına ne yağmurluk ne de mont almışsındır... (Şemsiye mi? O da ne?) Yakalanıverirsin yağmura... Sonra bir şarkı mırıldanmaya başlarsın gayri ihtiyari:

"Bu sabah yağmur var Istanbul'da
Gözlerim dolu dolu oluyor bilinmezliğe
Anne sozu dinler gibi masum
Ağladım bu sabah

Şarkılarda düşünmek seni bana getirmez ki.."
